MBA Junior Environmental Analyst Janna Waligorski's map, entitled Shasta Valley Surface Geology, won first place in the student cartography contest at this years California Geography Society's Annual meeting beating out 10 other finalist maps created by students from various California Universities. Chico State, where Janna attends, swept the contest with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place run. The map was developed in conjunction with a groundwater inventory analysis prepared by California Department of Water Resources Northern District, on behalf of the Shasta Valley Resource Conservation District. All digitizing, data compilation and cartography was performed by Janna. The map presents surface geology, watersheds, rivers, creeks, and major roads within the boundary set by the Department of Water Resources. Additionally, the approximate extent of the avalanche debris flow, originally part of ancestral Mt. Shasta, is included because of its role in regulating and redirecting the natural flow of groundwater to the Shasta River. Geologic features were digitized from the 1:250,000 Geologic Map of California, Weed Sheet. The map was scanned, digitized and symbolized using ArcMap software. Additional layers, including topography, were added and the resulting map layers were exported to Macromedias Freehand software where additional cartographic techniques were performed.
“ I just want to thank you and your team for the great environmental document that was prepared for our project. The firm of Michael Brandman Associates was very professional in every aspect of consultant services to the project and the City of San Ramon. You were always available when called upon and never 'nickel and dimed' us when we needed a quick answer on something. I know the staff and the Planning Commission was very pleased with the document in terms of its comprehensiveness and readability. For sure, your firm will be called upon to work on future significant planning projects in the city.”
